Dogs, cats, and many other mammals have endocannabinoid systems, just like humans do. The endocannabinoid system is made up of receptors — like CB 1, CB 2, and others — that help maintain homeostasis in the body. These receptors are located in the brain, organs, connective tissues, glands, and immune cells. Depending on where the receptors are located, their purpose may differ; however, in all cases they exist to maintain balance in the internal workings of our bodies despite fluctuations in our external world.
Fourth of July
Talking about fluctuations in our external world… 4th of July is a big one. This day, and several days proceeding and following, are scary for our pets. The loud “boom” of fireworks can frighten many, nearly to death. Yesterday, I saw a post on Facebook from one of my friends that showed a photo of her bed that had been eaten by her dog during some neighborhood pre-4th fireworks. Another post, from an animal protection agency, showed a dog that had run through a sliding door window during some fireworks… the dog lived, but he needed significant medical care, and the door was demolished.
What does this have to do with CBD?
Hemp CBD has been purported to help alleviate anxiety in pets. Hemp CBD may be able to support you in making your pet more comfortable during this holiday.
There are many different options for administering CBD to your pet. With dogs, you can sprinkle a powder on their kibble or in their wet food; give them a treat, put drops in their mouth, or rub it in their ears on on their paws. Cats can take it too, although I’ve seen fewer options. We carry an oil that you can put in their mouth, but you can also just put drops on their paws which will cause them to lick it off. That’s how I give it to my cat.
While it hasn’t been proven to cure any illnesses, diseases, or imbalances in our — or our pet’s — bodies, there has been significant definitive research to show that hemp CBD has anti-anxiety, anti-inflammatory, and anti-septic properties. The anti-anxiety properties are what we are seeking on this day.
Make sure, however, that you do not ever give your pets a product with THC in it, unless it is in minute amounts — 0.3% or less. THC at its best will exacerbate the problem you are trying to fix, and at its worst it will cause paranoia and fear reactivity (along with other terrible side-effects). Never, and I mean never, give your pet THC in excess of 0.3%!
