CBD vs THC, what is the difference? If you’re new to CBD oil it can be difficult to understand the difference between the two and how they relate to each other. To help you to better understand, we’re breaking things down for you in today’s post.
CBD vs THC: What’s the Difference?
When we talk about CBD, we are talking about Cannabidiol. Cannabidiol is a phytocannabinoid that is found in plants in the cannabis family in the form of a thick resin. There are two main classifications of the cannabis plant – Cannabis sativa and Cannabis indica – and approximately 113 cannabinoids have been identified in those cannabis plants as of February 2019.
When we talk about marijuana (either medical or recreational), we are talking about plants that can fall into the Cannabis sativa or Cannabis indica family. When we talk about hemp, we are talking about plants that fall into the Cannabis sativa family only. Although both plants can fall into the Cannabis sativa family, the levels of THC in each plant are one of the main differences between the two.
CBD is what produces many of the medical benefits that are associated with medical marijuana.
When cannabis plants are grown for medical applications, they are bred under very strictly regulated conditions to produce high-quality plants that have higher levels of CBD and lower levels of THC than marijuana used for recreational use.
The amount of THC in medical marijuana differs based on the strain of marijuana used and the condition being treated. There are now 33 states where medical marijuana use is legal.
What’s the Difference Between Medical Marijuana and CBD Oil?
Medical marijuana uses marijuana that has been bred specifically to have low THC levels and high CBD levels and you must have a prescription from a licensed doctor to obtain medical marijuana from a licensed dispensary.
CBD oil is concentrated cannabidiol oil that has been extracted from Cannabis plants. In the U.S. for CBD products to be legal, state law deems that those products must have less than a specific percentage of THC content. This level is usually .3%. When a product has less than .3% THC content, that product is considered a hemp product rather than a marijuana product.
When we talk about THC, we are talking about Tetrahydrocannabinol. Tetrahydrocannabinol is one of the 113 cannabinoids that is found in cannabis plants. Unlike CBD, THC is a psychoactive cannabinoid compound.
THC is what produces the “high” that many recreational marijuana users seek when they’re using the drug.
When plants are grown for recreational use, they are bred specifically to produce higher THC content and lower CBD content.
THC is present in marijuana bought from recreational dispensaries that are located in states where recreational marijuana is legalized. There are currently ten states where recreational marijuana use is legal.
