Hemp is poised for federal legalization this month
On Tuesday of this week, the Senate approved the $867 billion farm bill 87-13. The following day, the House of Representatives approved it in a 369-47 landslide. It is now on President Trump’s desk for signature.
This hemp legislation was introduced by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky earlier this year. The most notable change to business as usual in the Agricultural Department is this bill’s legalization of hemp.
CNBC reports that the farm bill would make industrial hemp a lawful agricultural commodity. It would allow states to become the primary regulators of hemp cultivation. It would also enable researchers to apply for federal grants and would make hemp eligible for crop insurance.
The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency is expected to remove CBD from its Schedule I list of controlled substances as early as mid-December.
Very exciting news indeed!
