What are Terpenes? It’s something we hear asked quite often by customers who are interested in our True Terpenes selection in our CBD online store. Today we are going to explain exactly what terpenes are and how you can use them.
What Are Terpenes? Everything You Need to Know
If you look in our online store, you’ll see plenty of great terpenes from True Terpenes, but do you know what terpenes are or what they do? Allow us to explain…
What Are Terpenes?
When we talk about terpenes, we’re talking about a class of organic compounds that are found naturally in some types of plants and insects. When we’re talking about plants, terpenes are found naturally in the plant’s essential oils and influence the fragrance of the plant.
It’s important to know that while they sound similar, terpenoids are not the same thing as terpenes. Unlike terpenes, terpenoids are terpenes that have been modified by curing and drying. This drying process changes the oxygen content in the terpenes and creates a different fragrance.
What is the Purpose of Terpenes?
In the cannabis plant, terpenes are made in small crystals that cover both the buds and the leaves of the plant, these crystals are called trichomes. Trichomes produce fragranced terpenes as a method of protecting the plant against insect infestation and animals that would otherwise eat the plant. There are more than 100 types of terpenes identified to date.
Why Do We Use Terpenes?
If the purpose of terpenes is to protect a plant from predation and disease, why do we use them?
Different type of terpenes have different fragrances to them. The different fragrances are common in different strains of plant and each type of fragrance leaves us feeling a certain type of way.
There are some common types of terpenes found in plants and terpene products can be created using these terpenes or by cross-breeding plants to develop new strains. This crossbreeding is done to highlight specific terpenes and effects of those terpenes.
Some of the more common terpenes include:
Myrcene – Myrcene is found in Chemdawg, Grape Stomper, Fire Alien Kush, and Agent Orange strains.
A-Pinene – A-Pinene is found in Vanilla Kush, Cookie Cross, 9lb Hammer, and Lavender.
Caryophyllene – Caryophyllene is found in Gorilla Glue #4, Tangerine Dream, Sage N Sour, and Pineapple Express.
Limonene – Limonene is found in Girl Scout Cookies, Pre-98 Bubba Kush, Tangerine Dream, and Cush/Green Crack.
Humulene – Humulene is found in Liberty Haze, Gorilla Glue #4, Cush/Green Crack, and Sage N Sour.
